RAMSEY CO., MN – The accident that seriously injured a state trooper on Friday involved a stolen vehicle whose driver was attempting to evade police, KTSP reports.
This story updates our reporting from yesterday.
According to the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, the pursuit began at about 10:30 p.m. on May 1. A deputy noticed a Hyundai sedan flagged as stolen and that had apparently been involved in a chase the previous night. The deputy attempted to pull it over in the Highland section of St. Paul.
The driver did not pull over, and instead fled across the Ford Parkway Bridge into Minneapolis. The deputy ended their pursuit after losing sight of the Hyundai.
Not long afterward, the Hyundai slammed into the side of a Minnesota State Police cruiser at W 46th Street and Aldrich Avenue S. The car was going 80 miles per hour at the time of the collision.
The force of the collision caused the trooper to become trapped inside their vehicle. Emergency responders extricated that individual and transported them with “significant injuries.”
The Hyundai’s driver was able to get out of the car and run away on foot but was soon apprehended. Two passengers in the stolen vehicle suffered serious injuries.
Police say that the 19-year-old driver of the stolen vehicle has two previous arrests for attempting to flee police. That individual is being held in Ramsey County Jail while charges are pending.
